Home >> Language Proficiency Testing

The language proficiency exams are designed to assess the language ability of candidates who need to study or work where English is the language of communication. Since most activities are conducted in English in most of the Canadian provinces, it is essential that all students possess the writing and speaking skills necessary to cope with the rigors of the academic curriculum. If your first language is not English, or if your previous education has been conducted in another language, you will normally be required to demonstrate English proficiency by undertaking and submitting the results of one of the following at the level relative to the program or school to which you apply:
  • A minimum of three years of full time study in an English language school system with acceptable grades in English courses.
  • One or two full year of study in an accredited university degree or diploma program in a country where English is considered a primary language.
  • International English Language Testing (IELTS)
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
  • The Canadian Academic English Language Assessment test
  • Michigan Test of English Language Proficiency (MELAB)
